A learnership is a training program that mixes study with real work experience. It helps students gain skills while earning a small income.
In South Africa, learnerships are offered by companies together with SETA, the Sector Education and Training Authority. They are made for young people who want to enter the job market but do not have full qualifications yet.
At UNISA, students often join business or IT learnerships. These programs allow them to study theory while working in offices. It gives them a chance to apply what they learn in real situations.
Mining companies like Anglo American and Exxaro also provide engineering learnerships. Students work on site while learning safety rules and technical skills. This helps them prepare for jobs in mining and construction.
Retail groups such as Shoprite and Pick n Pay offer customer service learnerships. Students learn about sales, stock management, and teamwork. Many graduates are hired full-time after completing the program.
Learnerships usually last between twelve and twenty-four months. During this time, students attend classes and also work at the company. At the end, they receive a qualification registered with the South African Qualifications Authority.
Funding often comes from NSFAS or from the company itself. This makes learnerships affordable and accessible for students from different backgrounds. It is a strong way to build a career without needing a full university degree.
