A number of South African students hope to enter university in 2026. The process can feel big, but it is possible when you plan well.

Start by checking the admission dates. Universities like Wits, UCT, and Stellenbosch open applications in April and close around September. Missing these dates means waiting another year.

Look at the entry requirements. For example, UNISA asks for a National Senior Certificate with the right subjects. Engineering at Pretoria may need strong marks in maths and science.

Prepare your documents early. You will need your matric results, ID copy, and sometimes proof of residence. The University of Johannesburg also asks for a motivational letter for certain courses.

Choose your course wisely. If you want to study teaching, Funza Lushaka bursary works with UNISA and other universities. If you want medicine, UCT and Wits are popular choices.

Apply online through the university website. Most South African universities use online portals. For example, Stellenbosch has SUNStudent, while UJ has its own online system.

Pay the application fee if required. Some universities charge around R200 to R300. NSFAS students may get help with these costs.

After applying, check your status often. Universities update their portals with progress. You may also get emails or SMS messages about your application.

Do I need to apply to more than one university?

Yes, it is smart to apply to at least two or three. Many students apply to UCT and Wits, but also add UNISA or Tshwane University of Technology as backup.
