University interviews can be scary. But if you prepare well, you will feel better. Many South African universities now ask students to do interviews. This helps them know if you are ready for the course. It is your chance to show who you are.
First thing is to know your course. If you apply for law, read about South African law. If you apply for medicine, learn about health in South Africa. This shows you care. It also helps you answer questions better. You must know why you chose that course.
Second thing is to know the university. Each place is different. Wits is not the same as UCT. Check their website. Learn about their values. See what they want in students. This helps you speak in a way that matches them.
Third thing is to practise questions. Some common ones are: Why do you want to study here? What are your strengths? What will you do if you fail? You can ask a friend to help you practise. You can also record yourself and listen. This helps you speak better.
Fourth thing is to dress well. You do not need expensive clothes. Just be clean and neat. This shows respect. If the interview is online, check your background. Make sure it is quiet and has good light.
Fifth thing is to be on time. If your interview is at 10am, be ready by 9:45am. If it is online, test your internet before. Being late makes a bad first impression. Being early shows you are serious.
Sixth thing is to be honest. Do not try to act like someone else. Speak from your heart. If you do not know something, say so. They want to see if you are real. They do not expect you to be perfect.
Seventh thing is to ask questions. At the end they may ask if you have questions. You can ask about the course, the campus, or support for students. This shows you are interested. It also helps you learn more.
Eighth thing is to stay calm. Take deep breaths. Drink water before. If you feel nervous, smile. Remember they are people too. They want to help you. Just be yourself and do your best.
